The Arch at the entrance of Tirumala Hills, which resembles the hood of a serpent is considered unique in the world. It is said that main deity in Tirumala temple is of the same height as the height of the Arch. Lord Vishnu is said to have put his first foot down at a place called Padalu, which is the highest point of Tirumala hills, Second step at the location of the arch and the next step is stated to have been placed where his idol is now worshipped in the temple at Tirumala
At the entrance of the main door (Mahadwaram of the temple), to the right side, a stick which was used by Ananthaalvar to hit Venkateshwara Swamy is present. Ananthatalvar hit Lord Venkateshwara Swamy on the chin when Swamy was in his childhood, which oozed blood. Since then, the practice and tradition of applying sandalwood paste on Swamy’s chin came into existence.

The first recorded endowment was made by Pallava queen Samavai in the year 966 CE. She donated many jewels and two parcels of land (one 10 acres and other 13 acres) and ordered to use the revenues generated from that land to be used for the celebration of major festivals in the temple.[9] The Pallava dynasty (9th century), the Chola dynasty (10th century), and Vijayanagara pradhans (14th and 15th centuries) were committed devotees of Lord Venkateswara. The temple gained most of its current wealth and size under the Vijayanagara Empire, with the donation of diamonds and gold.[10] In 1517, Vijayanagara Emperor Krishnadevaraya, on one of his many visits to the temple, donated gold and jewels, enabling the Ananda Nilayam (inner shrine) roofing to be gilded. After the decline of Vijayanagara Empire, leaders from states such as the Kingdom of Mysore and the Gadwal Samsthanam worshiped as pilgrims and gave ornaments and valuables to the temple. Maratha general Raghoji I Bhonsle (died 1755) visited the temple and set up a permanent administration for the conduct of worship in the temple.[citation needed][11]
After the dusk of Vijayanagara Empire, the temple went into the hands of Golconda in July 1656 and then it was under the French for a short period of time and under Nawab of Carnatic till 1801 CE. With the advent of British during the early 19th century, the management of the temple passed to hands of East India Company, who accorded special status to temple and avoided interference in temple activities.[12] Madras government passed Regulation seven of 1817, which passed the temple to Board of Revenue through collector of North Arcot District.[12] In 1821, Bruce of England had drawn rules for the management of Temple which is referred to as Bruce's Code.[12]
In 1843 the East India Company transferred the Administration of Temple along with other Temples in Tirupati to Mahants of Hathiramji Muth, who acted as Vicaranakartas. It was under the rule of Mahants for six generations until 1933 when Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams was formed as a result of the TTD Act in 1933.[13] The Act of 1933 was superseded by Madras Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Act of 1951.[14] Again in 1966, the temple was placed under direct control of Andhra pradesh State Endowments Department, with Andhra Pradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments act.[14] In 1979, act of 1966 was rolled back with new Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams act, where temple administration was vested to a committee consisting of Executive officer, Chairman and two other members nominated by Government of Andhra Pradesh.[14]
The temple bears as many as 640 inscriptions in Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu languages.[15] There is a unique collection of about 3000 copper plates on which the Telugu Sankirtanas of Tallapaka Annamacharya and his descendants are inscribed. This collection forms a valuable source of material for a historical linguist in Telugu apart from its importance to musicologists.[citation needed]
Tirupathi, a sacred place located in the Andhra Pradesh state of India is better known for its spiritual and divine ambience. The Lord Venkateshwara is said to be the ‘God of Kaliyuga’ and the story dates back to the centuries. As per mythology, Venkateshwara is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and we all know the story behind. Many a times, we had given a visit to Tirupathi, but still we are unaware of the hidden secrets about Tirupathi temple. Come, let’s explore today
1. It is said that the Deepa or lights that are glowing in front of Venkateshwara Diety are lit some thousand years ago.
2. The temple was closed for 12 years in the 1800s as one king punished 12 people and hanged them on the walls of the temple.
3. One can hear the sound of an ocean at the back of Lord Venkateshwara. It will be wet always even when tried to dry it for thousand times.
4. The flowers used for Puja in the GarbhaGudi are thrown in the waterfall which is behind the deity. They are not supposed to bring out of the Sanctum.
5. Actually Swamy Deity is at the right corner of the Garbhagudi but it appears to be at the centre. Next time when you visit, just observe.
6. It is said that there is a real hair on the main idol of Lord Venkateshwara and it never tangles.
7. All the puja items for Lord Venkateshwara are brought from a village which is located at the distance of 22 km from Tirumala. It is said that women in this village have a tradition of not wearing the blouse.
